05/02 - Paperwork and Electronics

New friends in Tokyo

to the Post Office we go,

just to sit there though.

Akihabara,

the name you have is too long,

for a good haiku.

On Day 2, accompanied by a group of other teachers who live in the same complex as myself, I was escorted to the City Hall of Higashimurayama and the Post Office. I thought we would have to figure out how to accomplish our two tasks of registering our residence and starting a bank account at the Post Office, however, Miki, the woman from the company we work for, did all the work. This explains the final line of the day's first haiky, as we sat powerless to help, doing nothing much beyond signing our initials in some boxes when instructed to.

After we finished, we set off to have lunch and then explore Akihabara, a district famous for its electronics and other geekdom. There were certainly a lot of nice elctronics, but perhaps too nice, since I wanted a kettle, but not one that costs about $100 CAD, no matter how nice it is. Later in the day I had my first beer in Japan along with a tempura on rice dinner. My second beer was a Guinness at the English Style Pub chain "The Hub", which cost around $10 CAD. So if you're keeping score at home, 10 pints of the good stuff = 1 Kettle.
