Rikkyo Campus
sprouts for the city to wrap,
an ivy haven
Tonight, we my friends,
feast on the bones of sharks,
and other delights.
Today I
toured the Rikkyo Ikebukuro Campus where I will be working. It is incredibly
nice. The school is very old, in fact it was founded in 1874, and there are
some really old nice looking Ive League style buildings I ate lunch at one of
the school’s cafeterias , apparently a famous one, with my colleagues. The food
was cheap and good and you can get green tea from a dispenser for free. We sat
in the large hall to eat and it had a great atmosphere.
For
supper I met friends in Ikebukuro. It was awesome catching up with some of my
Japanese friends that I hadn’t seen since they were in Vancouver, as well as
spending some more time with Yuko and Tadahiro. Ken and Chiaki, the newlyweds,
kept me thoroughly entertained with their banter. Chiaki kept telling me to try
as many different kinds of food as possible, and Ken was his usual hilarious
self and talked me into eating some cow intestine that was actually delicious.
The restaurant specialized in Kyushu style food. Kyushu is the southernmost
large island of Japan. On top of cow intestine I got to try some ray, eat
vegetables that were arranged to look like a flower in a flower pot, some
delicious sashimi, fried shrimp, gyoza, a big prawn that was grilled right on
the table and…….soft shark bones! Everything was very good. The shark bones
were crunchy and popped when you bit them.
